UN Trade and Development projects global growth of 2.6% in 2026, down from 2.9% in 2025. The agency’s Trade and Development Report says the Middle East energy shock, fragmented market access and concentrated AI investment are testing an economy increasingly led by Asia.

Asia remains the main growth engine
UNCTAD expects Asia to contribute 59% of global growth in 2026. Its projections put India at 7.3%, Indonesia at 5.2% and China at 4.5%. These are forecasts, not guarantees, and can change with energy prices, trade policy and financial conditions.
Why energy prices are important
UNCTAD said Brent crude rose from around $70 to above $110 per barrel in the weeks after the Middle East conflict began. Import-dependent developing economies and poorer households are especially exposed when fuel and food costs rise.
Trade in goods and services may still grow about 4% in 2026, but UNCTAD says higher prices are driving part of the increase in trade values. A larger dollar value does not necessarily mean stronger real demand.
AI creates opportunity and concentration risk
AI-related goods, including chips and data-center servers, are a major driver of merchandise trade. UNCTAD warns that concentrated gains and dependence on a small number of companies can create financial-stability risks.
